What is a dual mass flywheel and what does it do? Dual mass flywheel systems are kind of like a sandwich. They consist of one flywheel (primary) which faces the engine side. The other flywheel (secondary) faces the transmission. Separating the two is a spiral wound arc spring and dampening system. Functionally, the dual mass system splits total flywheel mass in half which results in many benefits such as; lower noise, reduced vibration, less stress on the drive train, easier to shift the transmission, improved fuel economy, and reduced drivability problems such as shudder and surging.
