What is a Water Pump?

The water pump is responsible for maintaining the flow of coolant in a vehicle’s engine. Blades on the pump propel coolant throughout the vehicle’s cooling system, from the radiator to the engine block and back, keeping the engine at the proper operating temperature.

Water pumps can begin to break down after extended use or time. If a bearing wears out, coolant may begin to leak from the pump, indicating that the water pump needs to be replaced. The pulley maybe also become loose, or the water pump may not be able to adequately keep coolant flowing, causing the engine to overheat. An overheating engine is a serious problem that needs to be addressed immediately.

In many cases, the water pump is driven by the engine’s timing belt, though in some vehicles it may be driven by the serpentine belt. If driven by the timing belt, it is usually recommended to replace the water pump whenever the timing belt is replaced, as most of the labour involved is the same.
