What Does an Engine Thermostat Do?

An engine’s thermostat regulates the flow of coolant in the vehicle’s engine in order to maintain the proper temperature. As the engine heats up, the thermostat will open to allow coolant to flow through the engine. When the engine has cooled sufficiently, the thermostat will then close itself off, enabling the engine to maintain proper operating temperature.

This process is crucial to the engine’s operation. If the thermostat is stuck (unable to open), coolant will not flow, likely causing the engine to overheat. This is a serious matter that needs to be dealt with immediately. Driving with an overheating engine can lead to extensive damage and costly repairs.

In addition to getting stuck, a faulty thermostat may act erratically, give false readings, or leak, all of which can negatively affect engine performance. Replacing a faulty thermostat is usually an inexpensive job that can save a lot of trouble down the road.
